The Power of Goal Setting

Tips for setting goals

"The Power of Goal Setting is so easy to follow!" Your goals should be coupled with a plan of action. Your plan of action defines what you plan to do to achieve your goals. Your plan of action should also be SMART

Writing down your smart goal setting plan is easy

Writing it down and making your vision plain will give you a higher success rate of achieving your goals. Documenting your smart goal setting plan and everything you put in your body and even your feelings will help you with this whole process

This can be easy to do.  Writing helps you to measure your progress, your mistakes and it will even allow you to see your successes as you accomplish your goals.  Write down what you want to look like and how you imagine your new life to be...in your new healthy body

Think about the "big picture." Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life

Easy Tips for Setting Goals

Smart goal setting is the key to any achievement you may accomplish. I always recommend following the acronym SMART, it dictates that goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-sensitive.

S = be specific what size you’d like to be, what you would like to be able to accomplish

M = measurable and defined in such a way that we can evaluate progress

A = achievable; i.e., challenging, but not impossible

R = realistic; a reasonable and attainable measure you can accomplish

T = time-based; that is, they are linked to a specified date

Take action!

You have to take action! Just pull out your calendar and decide when you will take action on your first goal. No point setting a goal unless there’s an action plan to go with it. Make a list of things you’re going to do to attain your goal, both – long and short-term. In the past whenever I have aspirations of losing weight I would fail to prepare.

Like the saying goes “If you fail to prepare then you’re preparing to fail. It’s an absolutely true statement.  Think about it, what have you failed at? Or better yet what goal have you set that you didn’t complete for lack of preparation?  I prove my point.

Keep incremental goals small.

Tips for setting goals

It can be overwhelming to think about your end goal. If all you say to yourself is, "I have to lose weight, I have to lose weight by the end of the month," you are missing the incremental goals that form the base of the large goal. Refocus and gain some perspective. Think about creating an online weight loss profile, meeting some friends or joining a social club with other who want to lose weight is a start.

Lose Weight by planning

Try not to be to discouraged if weight loss takes a little longer than expected. Effective, long-lasting weight loss involves not only diet and exercise, but changing your lifestyle. Choosing a realistic weight loss goal is just the first step in working towards your ideal weight.

I've listed some other great Tips for setting goals towards your weight loss efforts

  • Talk to your doctor to determine what a healthy weight is for your height and build.
  • Set long-term weight loss goals. These goals can be considered end goals--they take time to achieve and are met only after having achieved a number of smaller, shorter-term goals. A reasonable initial weight loss goal is 5-10% of your current body weight. If a person weighs 180 pounds, a safe and reasonable amount of weight to lose initially is between 9 and 18 pounds.

  • Set short-term weight loss goals. These shorter term goals are incremental achievements that lead up to the larger, long-term goal. A short-term goal would be to to lose 1-2 pounds per week. If weight loss is consistent, in less than 3 months, you can achieve the longer-term goal of losing that 5-10% body weight.
  • Celebrate reaching weight loss milestones. Take the time to assess where you are in your larger target goal. Once you've met a long-term weight loss goal, you can decide whether you should lose more, or whether you can enter into the maintenance phase of weight loss.
