Spirulina- The Super Food That Can Help you with Weight Loss

Spirulina is a simple, one-celled organism that got its name from the Latin word for 'helix' or 'spiral' because of its spring-like physical characteristic.  The use of spirulina as a food source dates all the way back to 9th century Chad and it is believed to have been used by the Aztecs in 16th century Mexico.

This product didn't come into commercial production until the 1970s when a French company began the first large-scale production plant. Within a few years, America and Japan began producing their own version of the product.

Unlike most plants that you may grow in your garden or balconies, this "miracle" plant is a form of blue-green algae that springs from warm, fresh water bodies. Most recently it’s gained the reputation of being one of the most potent super foods on the planet.

Spirulina is great for weight loss and can be easily mixed into juices and other drinks such as smoothies

Spirulina for Weight Loss

There are many people who want to use spirulina for weight loss. It has been suggested that when you use this super green food for losing weight you should typically consume around 500 milligrams per day, normally before meals or workouts.

People have their choice between different forms of the supplement; you can take it in a powder form, tablet form and flakes.  The recommended daily dose is typically between three to five grams.

You can spread the dose out to twice or three times a day if you like. It is safe to take higher doses, but this is a good place to start.

This super food reportedly curbs your appetite and boost the metabolism.  I have experienced these benefits for myself on several different occasions, but Researchers have yet to prove that it is an effective weight loss tool.

How I Heard about Spirulina

I heard about this for the first time when I was reading Tosco Reno’s book “The eat clean diet” she talked about how it was a great appetite suppressant that could help you get over some of your cravings when you start the diet.  Her statement peaked my interest in this wonderful super food.

I then began doing some research, bought the product and used it for several weeks.  Over those 2 weeks I noticed a change in my energy level. I also experienced a three pound weight loss reduction. I’ve been incorporating this fantastic super food in my daily diet ever since.

When to Take It

The ideal time to take  spirulina for weight loss generally is before a meal, with most advice hitting a window of 15 minutes to an hour before eating. This helps in making it a little more physically easier to keep portions under control.

Many people take it during a meal adding it to their main dishes or drinks. If a person is simply trying to get a nutrient boost rather than to limit how much he ingests, it’s typically better to take the algae like substance after eating. Some people have reported some nausea if they try to consume it following regular eating.

Spirulina’s Potential Detoxifying Reactions

Spirulina is a safe source of protein, this super food is full of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that have been used for centuries.

It’s also so potentate that it has a detoxifying reaction to those who are new to using the supplement.  Though there are no known side effects associated with spirulina, your body may react to it based on your current state of health.

Let's take a look at some of those reactions, what they mean, and what you can do to alleviate them.

In addition to being your powerhouse of essential vitamins and minerals, spirulina helps to detoxify the body. For that reason, it is best to start with a small dose and work your way up. Once you see how your body responds, you can then gradually increase your intake

The most prominent reactions you may experience are:

  • Slight Fever -- The high protein content in spirulina increases metabolism, which may elevate body temperature.
  • Dark Green Waste Matter -- Spirulina can remove accumulated waste product in your colon, which may cause darker stool. It's also very high in chlorophyll. This will also turn waste matter green.
  • Sleepiness -- This is caused by the detoxification process and may indicate your body is exhausted and needs better rest.
  • Excessive Passing of Gas -- This may indicate that your digestive system is not functioning properly or you have an extreme build-up of gas.
  • Breakouts and Itchy Skin -- This is caused by colon cleansing process and is only temporary.
  • Feelings of Excitement -- Your body is converting protein into heat energy, which may cause temporary feelings of restlessness.

Remember, your body may go through an adjustment period with spirulina, and your best bet to reduce a reaction is to dose gradually to see how your body will react. Increase your water intake, reduce your stress levels, eat according to your nutritional type, and get plenty of rest.

So, remember to increase your intake of spring or filtered water when taking spirulina to help it absorb into your system more easily.

Spirulina Has More Protein than Red Meat

When you think of protein, you probably imagine sitting down to a meal of organic eggs or grass-fed beef or maybe even drinking a whey protein shake.

If you're a vegetarian or a vegan, you may turn to plant-protein sources such as nuts, beans, lentils, and soy products. Unfortunately, soy is not the health food it claims to be.

None of the above-mentioned sources of protein compare to the protein punch delivered by spirulina. This Super food is 65 to 71 percent complete protein compared to beef, which is only about 22 percent, lentils and beans which is only 26 percent.

In addition to being a protein-rich super food, spirulina is an excellent source of vital amino acids and minerals easily assimilated by your body. You would need to consume only two tablespoons of spirulina as a protein substitute for a meal.

Important Contraindications for Spirulina

“Warning” Please be very careful, it can interact with certain medical conditions and prescriptions. Anyone who wants to take it should get advice from a medical professional first.

Even though it is entirely natural and generally considered a healthful food, there are some contraindications you need to be aware of. You should not take it if you have a severe seafood or iodine allergy.

If you are pregnant or nursing or have hyperthyroidism, consult your healthcare provider before taking this protein rich food.

Spirulina can serve as a potent "super food." Just remember to do your research and arm yourself with knowledge. It is the best way to take control of your weight and your health! After all, knowledge is power and when you’re powerful there is no way you can ever be pitiful.
