Spirulina is a simple, one-celled organism that got its name from the Latin word for 'helix' or 'spiral' because of its spring-like physical characteristic. The use of spirulina as a food source dates all the way back to 9th century Chad and it is believed to have been used by the Aztecs in 16th century Mexico.
This product didn't come into commercial production until the 1970s when a French company began the first large-scale production plant. Within a few years, America and Japan began producing their own version of the product.
Unlike most plants that you may grow in your garden or balconies, this "miracle" plant is a form of blue-green algae that springs from warm, fresh water bodies. Most recently it’s gained the reputation of being one of the most potent super foods on the planet.
There are many people who want to use spirulina for weight loss. It has been suggested that when you use this super green food for losing weight you should typically consume around 500 milligrams per day, normally before meals or workouts.
People have their choice between different forms of the supplement; you can take it in a powder form, tablet form and flakes. The recommended daily dose is typically between three to five grams.
You can spread the dose out to twice or three times a day if you like. It is safe to take higher doses, but this is a good place to start.
This super food reportedly curbs your appetite and boost the metabolism. I have experienced these benefits for myself on several different occasions, but Researchers have yet to prove that it is an effective weight loss tool.
I heard about this for the first time when I was reading Tosco Reno’s book “The eat clean diet” she talked about how it was a great appetite suppressant that could help you get over some of your cravings when you start the diet. Her statement peaked my interest in this wonderful super food.
I then began doing some research, bought the product and used it for several weeks. Over those 2 weeks I noticed a change in my energy level. I also experienced a three pound weight loss reduction. I’ve been incorporating this fantastic super food in my daily diet ever since.
The ideal time to take spirulina for weight loss generally is before a meal, with most advice hitting a window of 15 minutes to an hour before eating. This helps in making it a little more physically easier to keep portions under control.
Many people take it during a meal adding it to their main dishes or drinks. If a person is simply trying to get a nutrient boost rather than to limit how much he ingests, it’s typically better to take the algae like substance after eating. Some people have reported some nausea if they try to consume it following regular eating.

Even though it is entirely natural and generally considered a healthful food, there are some contraindications you need to be aware of. You should not take it if you have a severe seafood or iodine allergy.
If you are pregnant or nursing or have hyperthyroidism, consult your healthcare provider before taking this protein rich food.
Spirulina can serve as a potent "super food." Just remember to do your research and arm yourself with knowledge. It is the best way to take control of your weight and your health! After all, knowledge is power and when you’re powerful there is no way you can ever be pitiful.
